How advertising works in game plans

The two ways to add ads to a game plan, in-graphic and detached, how club ad slots work, when ads can run, and the overlay settings needed for ads to show.

Your game plan's playlists can carry adverts. You decide which ad shows, where, when and for how long. Ads can go in any playlist: pre-game, breaks, goals, cards, milestones or time triggers.

Two types of ad

In-graphic (baked-in) ads

Detached ads

What it is

An ad inside a graphic that has an ad area, such as the match ID, scorebug, team lists or match stats.

A standalone ad placed anywhere on screen.

Size

Fixed by the graphic's ad area. The app shows the size.

Any size.

Position

Fixed by the graphic.

You drag it into place on the 1920x1080 canvas.

How to add

Add or edit the graphic in the playlist and use its Assets section.

Add Item to Sequence, then Advertisement or Ad Template.

In-graphic ads

When you add or edit a graphic in a playlist, an Assets section appears if the graphic has an ad area. If there's no Assets section, that graphic has no ad area. See Adding in-graphic ads to playlist graphics.

Detached ads

Detached ads are items in the playlist with their own start time and either a duration or Loop:

  • Advertisement: choose from Image Ads, Custom Images, Video Ads or Club Slot, in sizes from Small to Extra Large. Leave the duration empty to keep it on screen for the whole playlist. See Add an advertisement to a playlist.

  • Ad Template: plays the template's adverts in the order set in the template. Turn on Loop to keep it cycling. See Add an ad template to a playlist.

For a side-by-side guide, see Understanding in-graphic ads vs detached ads.

Your ad or the club's ad

For either type, you can pick a specific advert from your organisation, or give an ad slot to the home or away club. For an in-graphic ad, choose Add Slot in the Assets section. For a detached ad, give the slot a name, size, timing and position.

Clubs see their slots on the Ad Slots page in the Club Portal, including the playlist, when it shows and its size. They upload the advert to fill it. See How to delegate ad slots to clubs through the Club Portal.

When ads run

An ad runs whenever the playlist it's in runs. That means you can show adverts:

  • On events, for example with every goal.

  • On time triggers, before kick-off or during play, for example a sponsor every 5 minutes.

  • In breaks, such as half time.

Time-triggered sponsor playlists usually run at priority 4, so goals and cards always win. To show a sponsor during play without the scoreboard, see Show sponsor ads during play without the scoreboard.

Make sure ads can show

Ads only appear on an overlay that has ads turned on:

  1. Go to Matches, find the match and expand it.

  2. Open the menu at the far right of the overlay's row and click Configure. The UPDATE OVERLAY window opens.

  3. Click Ads in the section list on the left.

  4. Set Ad Type to Brands and turn on Enable Ads.

  5. Click Update.

You can set the same options in the Ads section when you first create the overlay. If ads still don't show, see Why ads are not appearing on broadcast output.

Ad Allocation or playlist ads

There are two equally valid ways to run ads. Ad Allocation on the Ads tab is set per competition, with team percentages, event ad sets and a Live Sponsor Loop that plays sponsors inside the scorebug. Playlist ads in the Automation tab can hide the scorebug, sit anywhere at any size, tie to events, times and breaks, and hand slots to clubs. Choose what suits your broadcast. See Ad Allocation or playlist ads: which to use.
