Competition settings: default match rules

Set the default match rules, clock, stats, player, line-up, stream and overlay settings that every new match in a competition inherits.

Competition settings set the defaults for every new match you create in a competition. Set them up once and each match in your league or tournament starts with the same period lengths, clock behaviour, stats coverage, player options, streams and overlays. This saves time and keeps your matches consistent.

Before you start

You need a competition already created in the Assets tab, for example LIGR Demo League. It's best to set these defaults before you create matches, because existing matches don't pick up later changes.

Open the competition settings

  1. Click Assets in the left sidebar, then open Competitions.

  2. Select the competition you want to set up.

  3. Open the Settings tab. Start with the Match section.

Match settings

The options you see depend on your sport. The examples below are for football.

Half Length and Half Time Length

Half Length sets how long each half lasts, in minutes, for example 45. Half Time Length sets how long the break between halves lasts, in minutes, for example 15. These values drive the match clock and the timing of each period.

Extra Time and Golden Goal

If drawn matches need to be decided, turn on Extra Time. Turn on Golden Goal as well if the first goal in extra time ends the match. Leave both off for competitions where a draw is a valid result, such as most league rounds.

Penalty Shootout

Turn on Penalty Shootout if matches can go to penalties. Once it's on, you can give the shootout a name, which is how it's labelled in the match, and set the length of the break before the shootout starts.

Advanced clock settings

Click Advanced to open the clock settings:

  • Use a clock: turn the match clock on or off.

  • Count up or count down: count up from zero, or count down from the period length.

  • Cumulative time: choose whether time carries on across periods (for example the second half starting at 45:00) rather than resetting each half.

  • Injury time: turn on the injury time clock so added time can be shown.

Stats settings

Open the Stats section next.

Stat coverage

Choose the level of stats you want to capture:

  • Minimum: the essential stats only. A good choice if your scorers are new or working alone.

  • Standard: the essentials plus additional stats, for more detail in your graphics and data.

Players and Player Events

With Players on, matches include player rosters, so you get player graphics and player events. With it off, matches can be created without players. If you turn Players off here, every new match in the competition has players turned off by default.

Player Events sets which events are logged against individual players, such as goals or cards. Only the events you select are attributed to players during the match.

Line-up settings

Set the starting line-up size (for example 11 for football) and the most players allowed on the bench. These limits apply when line-ups are entered for each match.

Streams and Overlays

The Streams and Overlays section holds the default streams and overlays that every new match in this competition gets. Set these up so a new match, such as Harbour City (HCF) v Ridgeview (RVR) at LIGR Demo Stadium, is ready to go live without adding them one by one. Streams need the Streaming module and overlays need the Graphics module.

Save your settings

When you've finished, click Save. Your settings now apply automatically to every new match created in this competition.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Existing matches don't change. These settings only apply to new matches. If you've already created matches, update them individually.

  • Set defaults first. Configure the competition before you bulk-create your fixtures to avoid extra edits.

  • Check Players before scoring. If Players is off, player graphics and player events won't be available in new matches.

  • Match the rules to the round. If finals need extra time or penalties but league rounds don't, consider a separate competition for finals.
