Add an Overlay to a Match

There are three ways to add an overlay to a match: from the Matches table menu, from match Settings, or when you create the match.

An overlay is the set of graphics that sits on top of your stream: the scorebug, lineups, lower thirds and more. You need one on a match before you can put any graphics on screen. There are three ways to add one, and they all open the same Create Overlay pop-up.

Before you start

  • Overlays need the Graphics module.

  • You need a match, or the details to create one: a competition, a venue and two teams.

  • A stream isn't required to add an overlay. You can create the overlay first and link it to a stream later.

Option one: from the Matches table

This is the quickest way when the match already exists.

  1. Go to Matches.

  2. Find the match, for example Harbour City v Ridgeview.

  3. Open the match's menu on the right of its row.

  4. Click Add overlay.

Create Overlay opens straight away.

Option two: from the match settings

Use this when you're already working in a match's settings, or want to see its streams and overlays together.

  1. Go to Matches and open the match's menu on the right.

  2. Click Settings.

  3. Open Streams and Overlays. If there's nothing yet, you'll see No streams or overlays yet.

  4. Click Add New Overlay.

Option three: when you create a match

This saves a step when you're setting up a new fixture.

  1. Go to Matches and start a new match.

  2. Fill in the match: competition, home and away teams, date, time, venue, and any period settings.

  3. Click Create and Configure Streams and Overlays.

  4. The match is created and you land on its Streams and Overlays settings. Click Add New Overlay.

If the competition has stream and overlay templates, they're applied automatically when you use Create and Configure Streams and Overlays, so the overlay may already be there for you.

What happens next

All three ways open Create Overlay. This is where you pick the control room, template, stream, name, ad type, theme profile and control mode. Set Up Your Overlay walks through it field by field. When you click Create, the overlay is added to the match and appears on the Matches table when you expand the match.

Tips and common mistakes

  • One overlay per feed. A match can have more than one overlay, for example Main Feed for the stream and Big Screen for the ground. Each stream has one overlay assigned to it.

  • Running a full season? Set up overlay templates in your competition settings, so every new match starts with the same overlay.

  • Don't see Add overlay? Check that your organisation has the Graphics module and that your role can manage matches.
