Updating an Existing Theme Instance

Written by Julian Rodrigues
Updated today

Updating a Theme Instance in LIGR Live lets you adjust the look and feel of graphics for a Competition overlay without needing a new Theme.

What Is a Theme Instance?

Themes in LIGR Live are platform-level and are built by the LIGR team. Once a Theme has been made available to your Organisation, you create customer-level configurations of it called Theme Instances.

A Theme Instance is assigned at the Competition overlay level, under Competition > Settings > Streams and Overlays > Overlay Settings. Because a Competition can have multiple overlays, each overlay can be paired with its own Theme Instance and Game Plan. This lets you run different branding or presentation setups side by side within the same Competition (for example, a main broadcast overlay and a secondary overlay for a different output).

Updating a Theme Instance is useful when you need to:

• Change colours, logos, or sponsor imagery tied to a Competition overlay

• Adjust configurable options exposed by the Theme

• Apply updated branding across all matches in a Competition

• Refresh image assets used within graphics

Prerequisites

Before updating a Theme Instance, make sure you have:

• Admin or Owner access to the Organisation

• An existing Competition with an overlay and Theme Instance already assigned

• Any new logos, colours, or image assets ready to upload

How to Update a Theme Instance

Step 1: Open the Competition

1. From the main navigation, go to Competitions.

2. Select the Competition whose Theme Instance you want to update.

Step 2: Locate the Theme Instance

1. Within the Competition, open Settings, then Streams and Overlays.

2. Open Overlay Settings to see the overlays configured for this Competition.

3. Identify the overlay you want to update. Each overlay shows the Theme Instance currently assigned to it.

Step 3: Edit the Theme Instance

1. Open the Theme Instance attached to the overlay to view its configuration.

2. Review the available fields, which may include:

• Colour options

• Logo and image uploads

• Configurable options exposed by the Theme

• Sponsor imagery linked to the Theme

1. Make your changes directly in the relevant fields.

Step 4: Save Your Changes

1. Once all updates are made, click Save.

2. Your changes will apply to all matches in the Competition that use the overlay linked to this Theme Instance.

Testing Your Updates

Before going live, confirm your changes display correctly:

1. Open a test Match within the Competition.

2. Review the graphics output using your preview or monitoring setup.

3. Check that the updated branding, colours, and imagery appear as expected.

Tips

• Keep source files consistent. Use the same image dimensions and formats as the original assets to avoid layout issues.

• Test on a non-live Match first. This prevents unexpected visual changes during a live broadcast.

• Document configuration changes. Note what each configurable option does so other members of your team understand the setup.

• Reuse Theme Instances where it makes sense. If two overlays share identical branding, a single Theme Instance can be reused. If they need to differ, create a separate Theme Instance per overlay.

Common Issues

Changes Are Not Appearing

• Refresh your preview or monitoring output after saving.

• Confirm the Match is using the overlay that points to the updated Theme Instance.

• Check that the Theme Instance was saved successfully.

Uploaded Images Look Distorted

• Ensure the image matches the expected dimensions for that field.

• Use PNG files with transparent backgrounds for logos where possible.

Configurable Options Are Missing

• The configurable fields available in a Theme Instance are defined by the Theme itself. Themes are built and maintained by the LIGR team, so if an option you expect is not present, contact LIGR support to discuss what can be added at the Theme level.

Sponsor Imagery Is Not Updating

• For organisations using inbuilt themes, confirm the correct Ad Set is allocated to the Competition, Club, or Team.

• For organisations using Rive themes, confirm the sponsor or ad entries are configured correctly in the relevant Automated Game Plan playlist.

• Check that any sponsor image fields within the Theme Instance have been saved.
