What is a Theme Instance?

Written by Julian Rodrigues
Updated today

A Theme Instance is a customer-level configuration of a Theme, assigned at the Competition overlay level. It defines the exact look and feel of the graphics used across matches in that Competition.

Themes vs Theme Instances

It's easy to confuse these two concepts when you're new to LIGR Live, but they play very different roles.

What is a Theme?

A Theme is a platform-level visual template built by the LIGR team. It defines the overall design language for a set of graphics, including:

• Graphic layouts and styling

• Lower third designs

• Full-screen graphics

• Colours, fonts, and visual styling

• Animations and transitions

Themes are created and maintained by LIGR and then made available to your Organisation. Customers cannot edit Themes directly.

What is a Theme Instance?

A Theme Instance is a customer-level configuration of a Theme. When a Theme is assigned to a Competition overlay, a Theme Instance is created. It is a working configuration that:

• Is tied to a specific Competition overlay

• Pulls in that Competition's Teams, Clubs, and match data

• Can be configured by the customer (for example, sponsor slots, colours, and other available options) without affecting the underlying Theme

• Drives the graphics shown for every match in that Competition overlay

Multiple Overlays per Competition

A Competition can have more than one overlay. Each overlay has its own Theme Instance and its own Automated Game Plan. This is configured under:

Competition > Settings > Streams and Overlays > Overlay Settings

This means a single Competition can output different looks or graphic sets across different overlays, with each overlay independently configured.

Why Theme Instances Matter

Theme Instances allow one Theme to power many different Competitions and overlays, each with its own configuration.

For example, the same Theme could be used for:

• A men's Competition with one set of sponsor logos

• A women's Competition with different branding

• A youth Competition with adjusted styling

Each of these would be a separate Theme Instance, but they all share the same underlying Theme design.

What a Theme Instance Controls

Once a Theme Instance is assigned to a Competition overlay, it determines:

• Which graphics appear during matches on that overlay

• How team names, logos, and colours display

• Which sponsor slots are available (and, for organisations using inbuilt themes, which Ad Sets can be shown; for organisations using Rive themes, ads are configured in Automated Game Plan playlists)

• The default graphics available for the matches in that Competition

• The visual output seen by viewers on the Match Centre and Review Page

How Theme Instances Are Set Up

1. A Theme is provided to your Organisation by the LIGR team.

2. The Theme is assigned to a Competition overlay under Competition > Settings > Streams and Overlays > Overlay Settings, which creates a Theme Instance.

3. The Theme Instance is configured for that overlay (colours, sponsor slots, and any other available options).

4. Every match created under that Competition automatically uses the Theme Instance assigned to each overlay.

Tips

• Each overlay on a Competition has its own Theme Instance, so plan your overlay setup before creating matches.

• Changes made to a Theme Instance only affect that specific Competition overlay, not other Competitions or overlays using the same underlying Theme.

• If you run multiple Competitions that should look identical, the same Theme can be assigned to each and the Theme Instances configured consistently.

• Theme Instances are independent of one another, so updates must be applied to each where needed.

Common Issues

My graphics look wrong Check that the correct Theme Instance is assigned to the Competition overlay your match belongs to.

Changes I made aren't showing up in another Competition Theme Instances are independent. Updating one Theme Instance won't update another, even if they share the same underlying Theme.

I don't see a Theme Instance on my Competition A Theme must be assigned to a Competition overlay before a Theme Instance exists. Open Competition > Settings > Streams and Overlays > Overlay Settings and assign a Theme to the overlay.

Team colours or logos look incorrect The Theme Instance pulls data from the Clubs and Teams in the Competition. Check that each Club and Team has the correct logos and colours set.
