How to Assign a Theme Instance to a Match

Written by Julian Rodrigues

Assigning a Theme Instance to a Match tells LIGR Live which visual template to use for all graphics and overlays during that broadcast.

What Is a Theme Instance?

A Theme is a visual template that defines the look and feel of all graphics for a competition or match. A Theme Instance is a specific configuration of that Theme — it sets the colours, logos, fonts, and layout choices that will appear on your Scorebug, lower thirds, and full-screen graphics.

Every Match needs a Theme Instance assigned so the Control Room knows what to render on the overlay output.

Before You Start

Make sure you have the following in place:

• A Competition created under the Assets tab

• At least one Theme Instance configured under the Themes tab

• The two Teams that will play the Match

• Permission to edit Matches (Owner, Admin, User, or Gameday Operator)

Assigning a Theme Instance When Creating a Match

The easiest time to assign a Theme Instance is during Match creation.

1. Click the Matches tab in the left sidebar.

2. Click Create Match (or the equivalent new match button).

3. Select the Competition the Match belongs to.

4. Choose the home and away Teams.

5. In the Theme Instance field, select the Theme Instance you want to use for this Match.

6. Fill in the remaining Match details (Venue, kick-off time, etc.).

7. Save the Match.

The Match will now use the selected Theme Instance for every Graphic triggered in the Control Room.

Changing the Theme Instance on an Existing Match

If you need to swap the Theme Instance on a Match that has already been created:

1. Go to the Matches tab.

2. Click the Match you want to edit.

3. Open the Match Settings (or overlay settings) area.

4. Locate the Theme Instance field.

5. Select a different Theme Instance from the dropdown.

6. Save your changes.

When to Change a Theme Instance

You might update the Theme Instance if:

• A sponsor change requires different branding

• You want to test a new design before going live

• The Competition uses different Theme Instances for different rounds or finals

• The original Theme Instance was assigned incorrectly

How Theme Instances Connect to Competitions

Theme Instances are usually set up at the Competition level so every Match in that Competition inherits the same look. When you create a Match under a Competition, LIGR Live will typically default to the Competition's Theme Instance — but you can override this per Match if needed.

Tips

• Create and test your Theme Instance in a practice Match before using it in a live broadcast.

• Open the Match in the Control Room after assigning a Theme Instance to preview how graphics look.

• If you run multiple Competitions, name your Theme Instances clearly (e.g. "Premier League 2024 — Main") to avoid confusion.

• Use the Monitoring Link to check the overlay output without affecting the live Control Room.

Common Issues

The Theme Instance dropdown is empty. You need to create a Theme Instance under the Themes tab first. Matches can only use Theme Instances that already exist in your Organisation.

Graphics look wrong after changing the Theme Instance. Refresh the Control Room and Monitoring Link. The new Theme Instance only applies once the overlay output reloads.

I changed the Theme Instance but the Match still shows the old one. Check that you saved the change in Match Settings. If the Match is already live, you may need to stop and restart the overlay output for changes to take effect.

The Theme Instance is locked or greyed out. Your user role may not have permission to edit Match Settings. Contact your Admin or Owner.
